What’s a good book on leadership?

Thatโ€™s a common question I can get when delivering training to managers. There are many excellent books on leadership out there, but one I often mention is ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ by Donovan Campbell.

Richard Pheasant with a book on leadership - the leader's code

If his name sounds familiar, itโ€™s because he also authored ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜–๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ, a compelling account of his Marine platoonโ€™s experiences in Iraq.

While Joker One is a gripping war memoir, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ takes a broader look at leadership, exploring the traits Campbell believes are essential for leading well: Mission (knowing your purpose), Excellence, Kindness, Discipline, Courage, Wisdom, Virtue, and Servant Leadership. Each is unpacked with clarity and backed by a number of practical principles. Interestingly, we often cover traits like these on our Essential Leadership Skills For Managers training programme.

But itโ€™s his chapter on ๐—ต๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† that truly stands out. Campbell defines humility as a realistic and unflinching view of yourself, together with the ability to recognise your strengths and weaknesses, as well as to be able to self-reflect and accept praise and constructive feedback (that may include criticism) from others.

As Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, once put it:

Humility matters in leadership because only when we see ourselves or what we do clearly, can we then grow effectively. In fact, Campbell notes that, โ€œOf all the studies the leadership department at Harvard Business School has done on various types of leaders, the one quality many successful leaders share is humility.โ€

Thatโ€™s food for thought. And ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณโ€™๐˜ด ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ is well worth a read. You can buy a copy on Amazon here.

Emotional Intelligence: The Leadership Skill That Separates Effective and Ineffective Managers

Most managers donโ€™t fail because they lack technical skills. They often fail because they struggle with people. And a lack of Emotional intelligence (EI) can often be the reason.
